Upon arriving in Granada, it was quite rainy and cold...a bit depressing when you come expecting a break from winter. Change is in the air, however, as the past few days have been beautiful! I grow more excited each day for all the opportunities ahead of me here: my official classes start in a little over a week, travel plans to go hiking in the Sierra Nevadas and visit places like Morocco fuel my excitement, and trips to the Alhambra and other wonderful places beckon on the horizon.
I sense change in other ways, too. Each night my roommate and I relax over dinner with Ana our host mom while we watch the news...it´s fascinating to learn about the issues facing other nations besides your own, as well as to hear news of your own country through the eyes of another. Ana gladly explains things to us, teaching us how Spanish people live and perceive things (which is also a great opportunity to learn new vocabulary).
¡Le quiero Ana muchísimo! She is fabulous--truly, Lisa and I believe we have THE best host mom of all. In her fifties, Ana´s wisdom, grace, and humor exude from her cheery presence and skillful work. She cooks the most wonderful meals, making everything by hand (pizza dough, broth, jam--no joke!), and loves to sit for hours talking with us about all kinds of things. Sometimes when we can´t think of a word or want to know how to say something in Spanish, we find Ana,"You take a key and put it in the door to open and close the door. That box that you put the key in, what is it called?" We have so much fun! I´m so glad we have four months together.
It´s a beautiful day and I´m sitting inside? ¡Me voy! :)
Blessings,
Brittany

Hi brittany! I learned from a woman who lived in Granada that the Arabs occupied the area for 200 years and left a lot of culture there in architecture, tilework, etc. I think she mentioned the Alhambra... is that Arab influence? She said it is a beautiful area. Can't wait to hear and see more through your site.
ReplyDeleteYeah for SUN! We had a snow day with lots of snow and ice, followed by some sun... all good!
